Just a gentle reminder to peeps to make sure you have good lids on your betta tanks....

I have a glass free standing lid on my Arcadia Arc tank and it has an inch gap at the back round the light fitting.

Last night I came home and in my half blindness, I thought there was a java fern leaf on the floor. Nothing unusual cos I had cleaned a few tanks out and deleaved a few dead'uns from the java the night before. Anyhoo, I did my usual mooch round my tanks and realised there were only 2 girls in the Arc tank. Guess what the 'leaf' was.... :/ :-(

I now have to make a new lid at work that reduces the gap round the edges so that it doesn't happen again and am rethinking my plans to have a male in the tank.

Hope this doesn't happen to anyone else. I still can't believe how the fish jumped out like that, but it's happened so be warned by this tale :(

Hi Jennybugs.
Sorry for your loss

I have 2 of the arc tanks and both have a boy in.. Haven't had a problem up to now but they are quite big boys and would struggle to get through the gap i think.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Kaz, I really can't understand how the stupid fish ended up jumping out of the tank myself! The lids are adequate enough I would have thought to prevent that sort of thing happening. Also not sure how it got right acroos the other side of the room, unless my kitties had anything to do with that bit :shout: Just something to be aware of though.

I lost 3 fish and a filter shrimp in one night in my 130L tank when somehow they all got through a gap 1 inch deep by 2 inches wide where the electric cables run through from the back!  It's all taped over now, but I never would have thought it possible

I've made a new perspex lid at work today (yep I'm really busy  ) so hopefully that will just stop this from happening again. Also a good excuse to get more girls too

Hmmm, Your pusscats aren't going on fishing trips are they????
Just thinking maybe if they got a paw down the gap? Would make more sense i reckon...
We all know what crafty little boogers cats can be Lol

They pay no attention to the tanks at all as a general rule of thumb, but I guess it is a possibility. There's only one kitty who comes on the side when I am there and that's only to climb on my shoulder and lay across my back

Anyway, new lid has been made...

It'll keep her out...

I got a new girl this morning...no doubt about her sexuality I am pleased to say. She's the one at the bottom here

That's a great lid you made there Jen! Poor little lady - perhaps that'll teach her to stop jumping in fish heaven eh... x

I still can't believe I lost one like that! :( All's nice a peaceful at the moment so am still hoping I have 3 girls again now although still not sure about the red one  Still, no chasing, nipping or bubble nests so that must be a good sign
