My first review :D
So decided to have a little poke around the new MA Croydon store. I was left a little bit disappointed :/
The store was apparently opened to the public around a week ago. Upon arriving, the store was open but it was unfinished. There were men cementing the floor and setting up the aquariums. Only around 1/5 of the tanks had water in them and the only fish were Guppies, Platies, Black Neon Tetra, Leopard Danio and Zebra Danio. None of the tanks had prices. The plants section was a little better, there were around 10 species of plants. However the bunched plants were £2.00 and the potted plants were £3.50 which is a little expensive in my books. The man working there was very kind. He told me the shop would be fully completed in around a week. There was a large range of dry products (filter and media, foods, treatments...) for both ponds and aquariums. The store is pretty small though. So to sum this up:
This small store is pretty good. Although it is over-priced, the store has an excellent dry products area. The plants & fish area are limited in stock and are also over-priced. Customer service is top notch though. ;)

BTW the store is tucked at the back of the car park away from the garden centre. :)

croydon aquazoo is much better. but small.

they do have all the rare meds and stuff. u can order almost anything.. even carpet plants for sand.

I went to MA in Sefton for the first time today, I was rather stunned. Some of the tanks were a little over stocked specifically the guppy/neon/molly tanks the sort of tanks you know will sell though. After browsing around I decided to have a chat to the guy working there and boy did he know his stuff. I must of talked to him for a good 30 minutes about anything and everything fish and aquarium related. I had gone in initially going to buy some Zeo-Carb for try soak up and ammonia spikes in my recent filter media transplant scenario however he talked me out of it after discovering I use Seachem Prime, he explained effectively they are doing the same task though the Zeo Carb will be less beneficial in the long run and far too expensive to do if all hell broke loose and the transplant failed.

His plant knowledge was outstanding, He knew all his plants his guidance was fantastic and his knowledge for lighting and everything was just well... not what you expect from a mainstream fish store.

However... that was just one guy, I know for a fact that it's not going to be that way everywhere especially when on their website for recruitment they state experience in the hobby is preferable rather than required.

Over all good quality knowledge and advice, a nice selection of fish though a little over stocked.

I also personally disliked their Betta setup, they had small betta cube tanks about 8 of them and only about 4/5 Bettas in stock however about 3 of them had broken tails.

I've been really impressed with MA recently. It's got all the usual in dry goods, a respectable plant section.

As for the livestock, it's really good. I've seen gorgeous Betta's appearing aswell as more and more Malawi Cichlids. They also have some gorgeous fully grown Oscars. Decent selection of Tetra's and other Characins. Great pond section and pond fish. I was even more delighted when I found what im pretty sure was a 18" Asian Aro in one of there display tanks - I'll have to go back and check as im no Aro expert.

The only problem is they are severely understaffed.

Thumbs up for Maidenhead @ Wigan. :good:

Aquazoo is pretty good but I haven't been there for over a year and I remember it being expensive. Anyway will try to go there tomms. I will describe some prices if possible :good:

Same at Sefton from what I noticed, there were 2 people there and for the last two hours of trading it went down to one guy.

I did go to Aquazoo today. Bit disappointed, everything was overpriced
For example-Rio 180 Aquarium only- £300 and something...
Red Tail Shark- £4.95
Angelfish-£7.95 each!
Plus on the price labels on the tank Angelfish was spelt as 'Anglefish' LOL

I visited my local MA a few days ago and bought some otos, which normally they haven't got in.they had some awesome green & gold laser corys in also with an awesomely expensive price tag to go with them  although they were lush and i was sorely tempted but kept the plastic hidden away

I like MA but do find they're quite expensive.Fish Stock is good lately, but their customer service lets them down...i.e. they're so miserable down there,i nearly said to them a smile won't go amiss every now and then...

And why are MA always in a garden centre? i need to walk all around the garden section before i get there

Different MA have different prices. For example, one of my local MA sell Pygmy Cories £6 each , the other sells them for £1.50.
Here in London, all MA are inside a garden centre, except MA@St Albans which is a MA store on its own :)
