I have been planning to give my guppies away for some time, and I was thinking about giving them the LFS. But a friend of my dads recently aqcuired a 55 gallon and "had an aquarium specialist help her set it up and pick fish". So I thought, this is an educated fishekeeper who can handle fish. She had kids, and I asked her if she would like some guppies and fry, and she happily said yes. I was excited thinking, wow these guppies are going to get a 55 gallon full of female guppies! Then she sent me pictures of her tank....and I almost DIED! She has two Blood Parrots, Tiger Barbs, 10 neons, a bunch of mollies and platys, and an unknown cichlid (looked like a some sort of geo. but it was blue) And no female guppies! I made such a mistake, I thought this woman was educated in fish  Her tank is probably uncycled, and she probably changes the water every month....I've condemned my poor guppies to a terrible doom...those barbs will rip their tail and the blood parrots and cichlid ate all the gorgeous fry....I'm devastated...I've told her what's wrong with her tank, and how dangerous it is...but I don't know if she'll take my advice

Oh my that's terrible. I can't believe that happened. What kind of educated fishkeeper would suggest that???

I don't see how they were an "educated fishkeeper" if they suggested that trainwreck. I'm sorry for your poor guppies.

*sigh* I just feel so #41#### guilty right now  They could be in my 20 gal right now, enjoying real plants and no ammonia, safe tankmates, and maybe some good 'ol brine shrimp or NLS because god knows this weenie is going to feed her fish that TopFin Or Tetra Flake crap

Did you ask if you could have them back? Or what was left anyways... Grr :grr:

I can't...I don't have the soul or guts too....She said her kids absolutely adore them and even named them (as if the names I gave them weren't good enough :grr: )

Give me her number I'll ring her up for you jk. Lol. I just feel so bad. I'm sure your names were great, but now you're little fishes are about to be eaten by meanies. I'd tell this lady her tank had many flaws then kindly ask if you could hold on to your guppies until things got sorted out because if nothing changes they're bound to wake up to a few dead guppies :-(

It already has happened! Her husband wasn't there with the "fish specialist" and came home with a "big blue fish" that promptly ate everything in her tank! She woke up to her kids bawling because all the fish were gone. I thought "well, ok that was the husbands fault. He didn't know but they learned their lesson".....Guess I was wrong...Don't get me wrong, she's a nice person

Wow. Now that's just Terrible. I'm sorry for them. Maybe now you can gel them with an appropriate stock now though.

Believe me, I did!
I told her tiger barbs are best in a species only tank, super aggressive to fish such as guppies. Get rid of the mystery cichlid, as he will eat almost anything (plus the water conditions are probably bad) I told her Mollies need brackish water to be happy, Blood Parrots probably aren't a good idea, and That she could up her neons. I asked if she cycled it. I also said I could further help her with any stock advice. But she hasn't replied and I don't know if she'll take my advice...

Actually mollies don't need brackish but if you want them to breed they will most likely breed easier in brackish. Just saying.
Hopefully she let's you help her.

Sounds like the highly trained fish department at Wal-Mart. Sorry about your guppies, seems like your having a rough week with your fish.
