Lyretail Swordtail Fry! *2 Month Old Update, Pg 4*

Moms usally get sick easily after birth because of all the stress. My live bearers do ok since I just let them birth in the community tank so there is no need to be moving her around before and after birth which reduces the stress on her. My female lyretail that gave birth got mouth-rot and ich after giving birth but it seems like she is starting to do ok. She looks like she is a perfectly normal fish agian, although I still adore the female in my sig much more. I am still waiting for her to drop. She isn't very big so I'm not expecting a lot of fry from her, but I know she is getting close to releasing her babies.

Aww, good luck with her.

You said that your female got mouth rot and I just figured out thats what my fish had and that it has spread to one of my guppys. What did you do to treat her that worked so well? Thanks.

Yea, it spread to some other fish too, I lost a few, but I finally bought some meds I never tried before.
Here is what I used.

I took out every fish and living creature (shrimps) out of my tank and sperated the ones that don't have any signs of fungus and treated them in a 10 gallon. Then I placed all the ones that didn't look very healty and had fungus on them and medicated them into a different tank. I lost around 3 fish from that tank. But all the ones from the healty tank went back into the newly setup community tank. The ones in the bad tank are recovering quite quickly. Thats the tank that my female lyretail is in. They will be ok to go back into my Community tank in about 4 more days. I'd isolate any sick fish and medicate them asap, But if you have time and extra tanks, you might want to do what I did, since there might be some healty looking fish that has caught it but is just not showing the signs yet. GOOD luck with your fish!
I'm not an expert or anything so you can either do what I did or get some more reconmendations from some of our more experienced members.

Thanks eveyone. I am definetly grateful that she had the will power to bring these babies into the world before it was her time :(

Bleechme--Thanks! I'm on my last straw, so Im willing to give anything a shot! That sounds like a great plan, and I actually have that medication, so I guess I just have to wait and see.

On a happier note, the fry are doind absolutely wonderful. I havent lost a single one which really surprised me. They are at least triple their size at birth already and are little eating and pooping machines lol. My marine science teacher said he would love to take some once they get older which is great, because he takes unbelievable care of his fish.

Thats really nice. I hope those babies grow up big and healty. Mine are doing ok.

Aww thats great. Your sword is gorgeous by the way!!

The babies are starting to really diversify now. Some are nearly white and some are so vibrant they almost look red. They have at least trippled in size so far. I cant believe how fast they grow! We havent lost any, but there is one wee little runt who seems to be hanging in there. He is about half the size of the others and still has the big bulging eyes that newborn fry have, but he eats and swims so I guess we just hope for the best :)

They always grow fast. I call it the "out of the belly, now its time to grow" time. Well, all it is that they are getting much more nutrients and things to eat and have lots more room to grow so thats what they do :D.

Thats awesome! I love the runts, You usally get attacted to those the most. ^_^

Haha! I know what you mean! I have fostered kittens/puupies/rats/mice you name it that have been pregnant and for some reason I just always fall in love with the runts! And he is still doing great so far. I will try to get some pics of him today, because he just a sweetie :D

Sadder note, I lost my first fry today at five days old :( I think he was deformed as all the other fry had, how to explain it...., a fanned-out tail, and his was just straight like his tail never fully developed.

RIP little guy :(

New pics, day 5 :D I greatly apologize for the quality. They move SO FAST now lol. Its near impossible to get even a slightly decent picture. Here they are anyway, though, just to give you an idea.

Awesome! My first female, (The one in my sig, *Picture below the post*) Had babies today! T_T I saw one get eaten right in front of me, then I scooped her out and put her in a 10 gallon alone (She was still kinda fat) Then I serached the tank and found one baby. I left her in in hte tank for about 3 hours, Then I came back to check and found 11 babies. I scooped her out and then There I have 12 new babies today!

Yay!!!! Thats awesome. I love the one in your sig, I love the mickey mouse pattern, sooo gorgeous. Can you see those markings at the babies? Teensy tiny little mickey mice  Good luck! We can go through this saga together now

haha. yea! But right now I can't tell if they are mickey mouse yet. I had 6 babies from my other female about 2-3 weeks ago and Now the little marigolds are starting to have a tiny black spot near their tail. :D
At first I was very sad that only one had black at the tail and now out of the six, there are 5 that are forming the spots. :hey:

And sorry about your little one that died. it's going to meet it's mommy. RIP
