will a lyre-finned (fancy) mail swordtail mate with a normal non fancy variety female swordtail. my lfs said it's not a problem, and that they do. just wanted to double check with you pros on here!

Yes, assuming he has a normal gonopodium (some morphs have such elongated gonopodiums they cannot mate in the normal fashion).

yep. As long as his gonopidum is normal sized there is no problem. You are liable to get a mixed batch of fry though.

I'm not positive where the Gonopodium is... but I think I have an idea. I had mollies when I was a kid and I've seen them mating. If it is what i think it is, my Lyre-finned male sword has quite the gonopodium on him. haha. if it's too big, what will happen. will he just not bother or will he try but unsuccessfully?

either way it's fine though, i don't NEED them to breed, it's just interesting when they do. :)

I have hifin lyretail swordtails and lyretial swordtails. :D A couple of them have elongated gonopodiums and they still try to breed. I'm not sure it does them any good, but they keep trying anyway. :X

Here are a couple of pictures that show the elongated gonopodium

Hope that helps. :D
