Notice one of my rams last night at the surface breathing rapidly about an hour after I fed them, by the time I set up the hospital tank (about 20 mins) he had disappeared, sadly found him under the bogwood dead, there was a single white spot on his dorsal fin and his gills were quite red. I have never had ick in this tank before. I had an accident with the tank a few days ago when the brace bar broke and shook the tank. My ammonia readings went up, so had been doing lots of water changes and turned up the air pump. The water stats have stabalised now, but just wondering if it could have been the ammonia that killed him. The remaining ram seems fine, the other fish also seem ok but the baby angels seem to remain at the bottom (apart from feeding time) there are no signs of any flicking or rapid gill movement on any other fish just on this one ram that died. Should I treat for ick just in case as I know stress can bring it on?

Bad water quality can soon cause a fish death.
Bless Him.
R.I.P.

Red gills can also be due to bad water quality.
How big was the spot on the fin.

It did look like an ick spot, about the size of a grain of salt, but I cannot be 100% sure. I am doing very small daily water changes still just in case. I am shocked the brace bar breaking caused such an ammonia surge. I am thankfull I have only lost 2 fish (hopefully thats all!)

German Blue (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) tank temp is 27

The temperature is more than likely the problem, I believe I picked up on this before, it needs to be 29-30oC but most tropicals can't take this. Also the PH could do with being lower than 7 or they won't do very well.

Thanks for that, learnt something new!. I did have 3 in the tank, been there for ages. Just lost 2 suddenly in the accident. I am guessing they were poisened or just didnt take the shock of the bang too well poor little guys. I will keep a close eye on the remaining one, I may move him to my boys tank they have rams too and theirs are doing great. (Rams are my little ones most favorite fish)

Keep an eye on your fish for whitespot signs.
Good Luck.
