My clown pleco has, for the past 3 days, been doing loop-the-loops around the ammonia alerter in my tank.
He'll stay attached to the glass next to it and then swim round it, an inch away, the same perfect loop with a little half twist at the end in order to get him back facing the tank glass. He's doing this constantly, lap after lap, a tiny break, and then back to business.
Does this actually mean anything, have you pleco lovers seen similar behaviour before via breeding, stress etc. ?
Is he the pleco equivalent of lassie "your ammonia, watch your ammonia!!"
Or is he just a bit wierd??? -_-

what can you say to that?!

it could quite easily be he's just playing or being a bit odd, plenty of fish do it, but it could potentially be a sign of stress so always worth having a little look to see if there's anything wrong.

first port of call as ever with strange behaviour, check your test results, what's your stats at the moment? you know the drill... tank size, inhabitants, maintenance schedule etc etc etc

Nope, its all good, i'll do a water change tonight to see if it makes any difference....
There've been 2 new labiosa added yesterday, but like i say he's been doing it for 3 days now. That reminds me emergency topic coming up....
Anyway;
I've just taken the food out, he's been ignoring it all day so he can play ring-a-ring-an-ammonia-tester and now he's stopped and is searching about for food...
Idiot fish! :shout:
Have you seen this or similar behaviour before?

idiot fish!

tried taking the ammonia test out and see what he does?

Why didn't i think of that.
Idiot person!

I'll have to wait for a bit though, hes still rooting for food.

I've actually had a somewhat similar experience with a guppy. This was quite a few years ago, so I didn't look much into it- but she would come to the surface and then spiral downward in circles until she hit gravel, then do it again. She's continue this for a while, then stop to eat, then go right back to it. Eventually, after a couple water changes, she just stopped- and went on to produce happy, healthy babies. I've never seen it since. :S

 Maybe he has OCD?
I'll try a bit of freudian psychology and see what i get.
Cheers wigs :good:
AmberMC ha! i'd a loved to see that, nevertheless its reassuring to know, for all the poor jokes i make i hope he (my entire tank) is okay and its just personality related....
I'll report back when i've removed the ammonia tester.

Removed the ammonia tester; he just sat there staring at the space where the tester used to be, re-attached it to its old space after caving in and he's been varying between being attached to it and just snuggling up underneath it.

I think he's in love!

hes like a little baby and his blanky, thats sweet :)

lol bless him, that's really really random

if he doesn't seem to be hurting himself, is eating and looks otherwise healthy i'd leave him too it.

Now he's the other way, thats a good 2 hours of constant tester love :S

Yeah at least he's happy....

Clown pleco never seemed more apt, he'll spend half the day scrounging for food and the other half attahed to it or doing the whole circly thing.
Right wierdo!
