I am looking at getting a 30 gallon tank, as soon as this weekend and I believe it is 36" long (standard). I still need to check it out, but I need a gameplan in my head while BigAls has free shipping and the filter I want on sale.

Anyways, the point is that this tank comes with a cover but no light. I am interested in growing some plants (low light is fine for now) because I can't afford a PC setup. Here is a link to the lightstrip I was considering buying: http://bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xm...oduct_sku=13940

I don't know how the lighting will look on this tank, nor how easy it is to find and cheap to replace 36" t-5's. The link says the fixture is 21w per light, so 41 watts total = 1.4 wpg.

Or am I better off saving $10, and getting this single tube strip light: http://bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xm...ategory_id=2535

Eventually, I may upgrade to PC lighting and better plants, but for now I'm almost thinking I should just go for the single tube fixture, which would give me 1 wpg, save me $10, and be easier (and cheaper) to find replacement bulbs for.

Your thoughts?

I think you'll regret that lighting. 1wgp is next to worthless when it comes to planted tank. You should aim for 2-3 wpg to be able to grow a better selection of plants. Don't get me wrong. Low lighting could be good, but your selection will be limited to anubias, moss and crypts basically...
