Ok I have a 20 gal planted already set up with *sunset* or *sunburst* platy in it and it's been running for about 2 years...All is well and doing fine..But I am getting ready to remodel my bedroom and would love to have a larger tank set up in there. This will be a new tank and I am very excited about it. I'm thinking about a planted 40gal. I want it to look kinda "Dark Woods" feel to it and this tank would be the showpiece of the room. What would you recommend for stocking this tank..just wanting to bounce some ideas around. I know I want to have platy in the tank (cause I love them) but what else would you recommend and how many and could you recommend a type of plant for a tall tank.

well theres alot of questions in ur post,

but i would say look into Harlequin Rasboras, they have nice dark orange and black on them, and they look great against black backgrounds, and green plants, and they school well and are good fish.

This question is asked so often, and it's so difficult to answer, because everyone has their own likes and dislikes.

Clearly you're a livebearer fan, since you've posted in the livebearer section, so one suggestion would be other livebearers. But then you'd probably want some bottom feeders (Cories, small plecs, hillstream loaches) as well, maybe some invertebrates. Maybe you'd fancy something else like a dwarf cichlid, or tetras, or a siamese fighting fish, or....... There are so many options, really the question you've asked is too open-ended.

Use it as an excuse to go window shopping at your LFS(s) - write down the names of the fish that you like the look of, then come back to the forum. There are so many experts on stocking and compatibility that you'll get lots of excellent feedback. I suggest you post in the Tropical Discussion section.

Equally on the plants, there are several which grow nice and tall. Vallis is excellent in this respect, because it grows tall, but is easy to maintain.

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum Andi.
There are lots of options for your new tank in terms of fish. It mostly depends on what appeals to you. Most "peaceful" fish the size of your platies or smaller should work out well. For plants, some nice easy care plants are crypts, vallisneria, anacharis/elodea and java fern. For livebearer cover, a nice clump of java moss works well.

In my 40gallon (which will be upgraded AGAIN soon) I have 3 swordtails, 2 platys, 5 guppies, and 3 clown loaches (the tank will need to be upgraded in the future as the loaches will get large. they are about an inch long.) I also have a 5 inches pleco and a baby chinese algae eater. I have different colors when in come to all the fish so it makes for a cheery tank with the plant/wood backround :) Hope this gives some ideas. Beware though, the fish in my tank breed like rabbits.

 Yeah, after I reread my post I'm like great I sound like a hyper 2 year old playing 20 questions. I'm just very excited this will be
my first tank over 20gal. I've just recently got into this hobby and I'm learning a lot every day. I'm now thinking about upgrading to a 55
gallon long tank..its $250 with stand then about another $200 in equipment but I'm still trying to decide what kind of fish I really want..I
I really like platies and guppies...but then again I've always been an Oscar fan..but keeping one fish in a $500 setup seems kinda dull. I'm
doing research and planning almost 5 months in advance of getting the tank..So I'm sure I'll be changing my mind a few times before I start
buying fish.
Thanks for any help and for putting up with me and my craziness.
