So I have a 125litre tank coming to the end of its fishless cycle it is reduced about 5ppm of ammonia to 0ppm ammonia and 0 ppm nitrites within twelve hours last night.

Now I'm getting close to the best bit adding my first fish and I fear I may have been given some wayward advice on the fish front.

Tank: 125litres roughly 78x42x40 cm

This is a list of fish that I like but not a list that i intend to completely purchase for obvious reasons...

Leopard danio
Zebra danio
Harlequin rasbora
Cardinal tetra
Emperor tetra
Dwarf gourami
Honey gourami
Guppy (male)
Bolivian ram
Gold nugget plec
Khuli loach
Clown killifish

Some of the fish on this list are more driven by research, for example the danios are supposed to be better fish to start with and they are the ones I prefer out of the fish that are considered better starters.

I would really like to hear people's opinions on what fish would live well together, would be aesthetically pleasing, and numbers of fish. I know things like tetras and the loaches require larger numbers like 6+

Anyway it's now open to discussion....

Gold nugget plecos are a bit hard to find, and expensive online. They also might be slightly too large for 125 liters.
Danios also prefer to be in shoals.
Your water pH and hardness might also be a problem, but as long as it's close to neutral, I'd go with
4 Clown Killis
6 Danios (I believe Zebras and Leopards are the same species, just different colorations)
6 Khuli Loach
2 Bolivian Ram

Maybe you could fit another group of something in there, but I'd start with that and see how it looks.

I'd just like to point out that the recommended 'starter' fish are for people fish-in cycling; as you're doing a fishless cycle, you can add more or less what fish you want, apart from those known not to do well in new tanks, like the cardinals.

I'd skip the emperor tetras and the gold nugget; your tank isn't really big enough for them, but all the other fish on your tank should be suitable, although knowing the hardness of your water would be helpful.

That's what i thought might be the case fluttermoth about the starter fish not being relevant after a fishless cycle but didnt want to make the assumption.

My ph is a touch on the higher side between 8 and 8.2

I know the killifish prefer a softer water but my lfs have them in hard water and say they were bred in harder waters whether this is true or not I obviously can't say but they are selling them in the harder water section.

I'm quite a big fan of the male honey gourami too but have been told they are hard to keep. Is that true?

If there were no restrictions like water type and compatibility I think I would like

Clown killifish
Honey gourami
Kuhli loach
Bolivian ram
Guppy
Gold nugget plec

However although I am aware there are different types of gold nugget plec available I believe the only ones I can readily get do grow too big for my tank.

Am I right in saying the clown killifish and guppys would clash? Mostly in where they spend their time in the water?

Any ideas on what I could replace the plec with.

I realised I was solely looking at the gold nugget plec thinking it would look after the bottom of my tank.

Thanks for sharing.
