Guys, I used to visit a website a year or so back which you put in details of your tank size, filter model and fish stock and it calculated whether the tank was overstocked and whether your fish are compatible etc. Now I can't remember the name of the site and wondered if anyone here would know the name of it or whether it's still running. I'm sure it started aqua...or aqui..something, not sure really. Any ideas, or anyone know of any similar site?

Was also a member of a forum which seems to be gone, again not sure the site name other than "site5" was part of the address.
If you know it, what happened to it?

Sounds like a pretty cool site, I can imagine that it would be a very general guidance but I might actually start a project to create a site like this.

Filtration never really seems to be taken account in these 'stock calculator' websites..it's easy to type in your filter, yet none of them ask what your water change regime is.

Terry.

And I think you have just mentioned the one that is banned from this website.

Because;

1. the stocking advisor can sometimes be very misleading for newcomers to the hobby, and it can't allow for all the variations in people's set ups, leading to inaccuracy.

2. they run a forum which could be seen as competition for this forum and, understandably, the owner of this site doesn't want it used to advertise it's competitors!

^^ this.

When it was first set up the owner of the calculator was regularly here asking for info regarding fish species etc. However, he also took information from some rather dubious sources and as such the calculator can be quite inaccurate and misleading, as fluttermoth says.

There was one which I saw about two days before joining this forum, and as soon as I got my tank the site went down to be rearranged and the stock calculator thing went off line. But to be honest I think our tank will end up being slightly understocked when it's done due to the layout of plants/ornaments etc being a bit unsuitable for the corys I was wanting to add originally. So they probably won't appear.

Been thinking about this response and have to say I disagree with it almost totally.
I can see there would be reason to say to newcomers that the info on the other site might not be wholly accurate so always check first but I've used it quite often in the past and found it to be a very useful tool.

Being honest here also, I find the second part of the reply a bit sad really. Surely it doesn't matter that users have a look around other forums as well. As far as the forum on that particular site goes, well....have you seen it? Hardly a threat now is it?

to make a rather poor analogy

McDonalds wont advertise Fat Mick's Burger Van, and TFF wont advertise any other fish forum.....no matter the size.

The results on that site ARE very inaccurate and it has never given me good advice. If I put in my planned stocking for my 75g - Angelfish, Rams, cories, tetras and a plec or two, the site tells me that I will be 175% overstocked, that I won't have enough filtration, that everything will fight with everything else, and the temperature ranges is 75 degrees - 75 degrees.

My planned stocking is for a S. American biotope and all of those fish live in the same environment in the wild. I could fit in a few more fish with no issues.

Relying on that site is won't leave you with a happy tank. Just come here and ask for help with your stocking. You will get real responses from people who have personal knowledge of the fish you want.

That site also had a few issues with loading malware onto user's computers. That pretty much iced it.
