Hi all,

I currently have a 48 litre (10 Gallon) freshwater Aquarium setup which is all going well, I have had it for around 6 months now but am looking at getting a larger tank, Below are a few questions i was wondering if the good people on this forum would be able to answer?

1. Is there a company within the UK that can custom build a tank to a specific size, googling it seems to only bring up company that build enormous tanks?

2. My current setup is in the place that i may want to put my new setup, to Move it do i just take out most of the water and move the whole thing including the stand?, It will only need to move a around 3 foot away?

3. I may also be looking at some kind of external filtering/heating system, I have been looking at maybe a DIY sump system under the tank, Is it plausible to Just get a sealed Plastic box, fill with water and submerge an internal pump and heater in it? then cycling the water from the fish tank into this sump them back again? i do see a few problems with this, First of all i would require an internal filter that has an inlet as well as an outlet to pass the aquarium water directly through it, Also heating the water in the sump then pumping it to the aquarium will mean it will take a lot of adjustment to get the temps correct? Any idea's on how i can set this up or should i just get an external filer system and leave the heater in the aquarium?

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum OneBlondeBrow.

First thing, I am in the US so I have no idea on a tank supplier local to you.

2. Drain what you can into a bucket and net the fish into it, empty the tank the rest of the way, make the moves and put the fish back into the original tank. You are now all set to start cycling the filter on the new tank. If the filter needs cleaning, clean it in the new tank to start the cycle on the new filter.

3. Don't bother trying to DIY a filter that is basically an external. They are not too expensive compared to all the work that goes into a sump and the related problems that you have identified. A canister, external in the UK, is available for the size tank that you want to have made. Once you know what that volume will be give us a shout and we can recommend one that will be a good match. I use the Rena XP series in most of my larger tanks and find them very nice to use and very quiet. Others here use the Eheim or the Fluval series and can likewise guide you to the right model from those product lines.
