Anyone know where to get such or what brands to search for. I'm really keen on what the Americans call a 20G long. Not looking to pay much and only need the tank, although a cover or lid would be nice. I find it strange that we never see this size as it seem so much more practical than the standard 20G.

I agree that 20g longs are a lot more practical than 20g highes.

Have you tried looking on GumTree?

Just get the pet shop to make the tanks to order.

In Australia we have the following standard tank sizes:
length x width x height (in inches)
18 x 10 x 12 inches
24 x 10 x 12 inches
30 x 12 x 15 inches
36 x 14 x 18
36 x 18 x 18
48 x 14 x 18
48 x 18 x 18
48 x 24 x 24
72 x 14 x 18
72 x 18 x 18
72 x 24 x 24 inches

We can also get any size tank made up. For example I had 6 tanks made up and they were 18 inches long x 14 inches wide x 12 inches high.
I had 6 more tanks made that were 3ft long x 2ft wide x 18inches high.
I had tanks that were 4ft long x 14inches wide x 14inches high.
I had a friend who got tanks made up that were 2ft long x 18 inches wide x 18 inches high.

Just find a shop that will make tanks and get a price for them to make the tank to the size you want/ need.

If you get custom made tanks, get them as wide as you can (18inches is a good width). It gives you more surface area and water volume but doesn't take up much more room in the house.

Custom tanks can have glass cross members and support strips as well as coverglass that can be 2 pieces (60/40 split). You have a small handle on the 40 and use it to lift the front cover when feeding the fish.

I don't think fish shops in the UK make tanks, I have never come across any. There are specialist tank building companies though - my 180 litre is custom built (N D Aquatics). The company used inches when I bought mine - 42 x 18 x 18 inches.

Even here in the US, most local shops and even bigger retail stores won’t make them. Here in the US, you have to find a really special place that will make them, or go online to find them. Either way, they are crazy expensive.

I think Dave's Aquarium in Bolton does custom tanks or at least they used to.

I think it depends on the size. My sister's boyfriend got his custom made from them and I don't think it was that expensive.

I am surprised they do not make a similar tank to the 20 gallon long in England. I have one and like it better than my 30 gallon high even though they have the same footprint. It is just easier to work with.

My tank wasn't super expensive, only a bit more than a ready made tank. But it did mean I got what I wanted. Most tanks the length I wanted were too tall and I wouldn't have been able to touch the bottom. The company I used also makes their tanks from 10 mm glass, which is more expensive than the 8 mm glass used in ready made tanks this size.

That is why I like my 20 gallon long, it is so much easier to reach the bottom and arrange things. With my taller tanks I have my entire arm in there or wait until I do a water change to rearrange things before I refill the tank.

Managed to find an ebay seller based in Notts advertising Clearseal tanks in all shapes and sizes. Have emailed him to check if he has a regular supplier as its collection only so can't get there right now :). According to his shop they are clearseal branded and come with a 5 year warranty (for whatever that's worth on ebay). I actually asked about 36x12x12" as that would be even better suited for what I have in mind. Pricing is signficantly lower than if I bought the glass and built my own.

Have also found a localish builder in Feltham who does ship - so another mail awaiting response :). Once travel is permitted Notts is easy enough because that's where the outlaws are so I have no doubt there will be a visit asap.

Clearseal did used to make tanks different sizes from usual. Looking at their website more recently they appear to have stopped the odd sized tanks though.

Not sure how far away you are but just for another option for you. Shirley Aquatics in the midlands sells the whole range of Clearseal tanks. Didnt realise just how many different sizes they do :)

I did see that. The outlaws live in Nottingham (yes yes I know :D) so once we are allowed out I will be up that way anyway.
