Well I saw some of these beautiful fish at the LFS today and I was going to go back tomorrow and get 6 of them. I read up on them on this site, wikipedia and other places and learnt they can fin nip, but not often. Now I have discovered another site with lots of people claiming that these fish have killed other fish in the tank.

What should I do?

Perhaps I should choose a different shoal of fish.

i had a pretty bad experience with serpaes myself. before i put them in the tank i knew that they were known as fin nippers, but i thought since i was putting in 8 of them that the number would keep them focused on each other...Wrong!. within a day all my other fishes fins had pieces missing. i left them in there for about a week to give them a chance to get accustomed to the environment to see if they would calm down. they didn't. i ended up taking them back and getting some boesemani rainbowfish.

I went ahead and got some juve cherry barbs, they have an amazing personality, and a long way to grow.

At first they made my whole tank swim madly, it was amazing.
