I noticed it yesterday evening and since then i haven't fed them. He is in a 55 gal. with 4 cory cats, 6 neon tetras, 2 bosemani rainbow fish, 1 swordtail, 1 sparkling gourami, 3 otos, and 2 other long-fined danios. All the fish are acting normal including the one with pop-eye. I do water changes every week and i just checked my water stats and the nitrate was a little high because of alge, but everything else was good.
He has a problem with his gill which i think might of caused him to get pop-eye. The gill plate is lifted up a little and either his gill is swollen or something is stuck in there. It is sticking out from under the gill plate just a little and it is white.
That it the best i can discribe it because he won't stay still. So any idea what is wrong with him?

It sounds like a bacterial problem, mainly because only one of the gills is infected. If it were parasites, it would be affecting both gills as well as other fish. Pop eye can also be bacterial.

Do some water changes to get the nitrates down. (algae probles usually show nitrate problems, not cause them). Also, treat with an antibiotic (either tetracycline OR maracyn and maracyn 2).

I am not the writer of this information.

Exophthalmia (a.k.a. Pop-Eye)

Symptoms:

Fish with exophthalmia will have eyes that are abnormally enlarged and protrude from their sockets. In severe cases the eyes may actually burst from the socket, leaving the fish eyeless. Eye swelling is caused by a build up of fluids in or behind the eye.

Cause:

There can be any number of causes for this condition. Possible causes include poor water quality, bacterial infections, viral infections, eye flukes or other parasitic infestations, or piscine tuberculosis. Even though the fish may recover, the protruding eye may remain that way. This should not adversely affect that fish.

Treatment:

Since there are so many possible causes a broad-spectrum antibiotic is recommended, such as Tetracycline, but this treatment cannot obviously guarantee success. Be sure to keep water quality in good condition.

Can you post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, is the fish with the gill problem heavy breathing, plus is there any mucas on the gill, can you see if you can see any parasites attached to the gill, or behind it, also does the gill look like it is rotting away, also check that the gill is not red and inflamed behind the gill not in front.

Would a anti-bacterical medicated food work? Because the LPS dosen't sell any of those medications.

my water stats are:
PH- 7.6
ammonia - 0
nitrate- 50
Nitrite-0

Normally for my nitrates i get a little less than 40.

Medicated food is fine, plus i would fetch your nitrates down with a water change, also make sure the fish hasnt got parasites on the gill.

i did a water change and gave them some of the medicated food. it didn't say on the bottle what the active ingredients are so i had to look them up (Active ingredients: sodium sulfathiazole and Nitrofurazone).
I can't see any parasites on the gill and he's not flicking on the rocks. I bought melafix and primafix from the LPS whould melafix be the best one to use?

I seriously think it is bacterial. Gill flukes tend to spread like wild fire. I have never heard of one fish being affected with them. Secondly, Gill flukes would affect both gills, not only one. His behavior doesn't indicate parasites either.

You are already using an antibacterial medicine (the food). Why do you want to use primafix or melafix?

Actually parasites can attach only one gill not always two.Same as us we can get an eye infection only in one eye.

I just sent you a message about a store in Richfield, MN-a suburb close to St Paul-called A World of Fish. They have EVERYTHING. It's overdue to be put on the map as Mecca for fish people. The clerks there are knowledgeable which is extremely refreshing. If anyone else reading this ever gets up that direction, go there!! We just came in off the street at random but I may have made a fish person out of my sister-in-law who went with me.
