Do any of you think bettas get lonely on their own? I know they don't like other bettas very much, but those of u who have them with other fish, do they interact with them enough to make u think they'd be unhappy on their own?

It's just I've never kept a betta in a tank all on their own, and I was wondering about doing so when I go back to uni.

Bettas are normally fairly solitary so they do well without company. =3 If you're really worried about lonliness you can try white cloud minnows, and african dwarf frog, or ghost shrimp. Ghost shrimp normally wind up munched in my tanks though so watch out for that. ADFs sing really pretty, I love both of mine, and I have never owned white clouds before but they are suppoused to be really good if there is no harassment from the betta.

My boy who just died was very unhealthy and 'depressed' I believe, and when I moved him to my new community tank (7 bloodfin tetras, 2 Dojo loaches...) for unrelated reasons (wanted less tanks), he actually started looking MUCH healthier, and became more active. I have seen him playfully chase the other fish, without making contact with them, and run away from fish half his size (the Oto). I believe this is one of the rare cases that a betta's life was actually improved by being with other fish.

it is a rare case though ^^ My other male, and by the looks if it my new female, will nto stand for ANY company!

Not highly. For instance, Claudius in the 15g with two tetras and 3 khulis has decided he tetras are bearable and easily scared, but the khulis make a nice snack.... He's in the naughty corner at the moment in a beanie box :)

Lol sorry, couldn't resist that. Bless.
I think it does depend on the temperament of each betta. Mine in his temp home has flared at the angels some 4 times his size at least. The catfish haven't bothered him at all and he's taken little notice of them so I shall prob have some cories in with him. If there's trouble I can move them in with the livebearers in the 30g.
Hugs,
P.

well i keep all my bettas tanks close an keep a piece of papper between the tanks an remove it about an hour a day so thy can interact an they do kinda seem to like it.

I've got 15 bettas in anything from individual 1 gallon bowls to a 35 gallon with giant danios. In my "experience", it seems to depend on the fish. I have some that are really peaceful and keep to themselves (like the one in the 35 gallon), but then I have others that jump out of the water to attack my fingers when I'm dangling bloodworm or something similar over the water. They're all kept where they can see eachother, though, and nobody appears to be lonely :dunno:

Yep, he is sulking :) He keeps swimming at the sides of the container and gets very active when he sees the tetras swimming merrily by....
