Loach Jumping Into Filter?

I have a QT tank with 4 yoyo's and 3 kuhli (2 kuhlis have died in the last three days). One of the smaller yoyo's has disappeared twice now. Both times I found him in the little HOB filter. Its a 10 gallon, with the small filter that came with it. It doesn't have anywhere that could suck him up, but there is that small space between the filter and the hood (where the water flows back in) that is open. I put some stuff there trying my best to block it, but he did it again. Any advice?

most filters come with some kind of top, so try that

Thats the thing, there is a top. the only spot I can see is where the water comes out, so he must just be really good at aiming.

try cutting out chicken wire or something, and covering it up, so the water can come out, the fish cant come in
also is he small enough to go up the filter pipe?

I will have to try and get some of that tomorrow, and give it shot. The tube has a screen/plastic covering that has only very small holes so thats not how it's happening. I've just never had this problem before.

Does the tank have a sandy bottom? And yoyo loaches are too big for 10 gallon tanks.

Take some panty hose, cut it to size, but a little bigger, stretch it over the top of the filter, then secure it with a rubber band. Crude, but effective.

Yeah some stockings can cover the opening, yet let the water out.
Are there hiding places? PVC pieces, rocks, flower pots? It may be swimming upstream, to find a place to hide.

Very important things can cause fish to jump out and try to land in a better/bigger pool of water. Make sure that your water parameters are good when it comes to the ammonia nitrites and nitrates. Then observe your fish for a long time and try to find any parasites of the gills or the scales or skin. Look for tiny circular parasites or a build up on any gills. Fish will often start jumping out when they have parasites like that.

Hopefully you will find nothing but a crazy fish!

Oops, also make sure that the filter and or airstones that you may have cause a ripple in the water. Where the water ripples is where carbon dioxide escapes and oxygen enters. Not enough oxygen can also cause fish to jump out.

For those saying it is too small of a tank, please note that this is just a QT tank, I know that. I will try the panty hose method. There is no substrate, as again it is a QT tank, there are some fake plants and large fake smooth rocks to make hiding spots. The water perimeters are fine, I check them daily with an API kit.

If so, he may be trying to jam the filter mechanism so the tank gets really filthy so you are forced to put him in a bag while you clean it.

If you do that, make absolutely sure the window is closed, otherwise he may get a pelican to help him try to roll out the window and across the road and into the harbour to be reunited with his long lost father.

With the HOB filter is the tank water lapping right at the edge of the return waterfall part? I know if I fill my tank too full and have a great ripple affect from where the filter is flowing back into the tank, my BN fry take it as an invite to get into the HOB filter. It is sort of like an aquarium fish ladder. The smaller yo-yo could be feeling bullied hence its wanting to get into the filter (plus filters have lots of yummy stuff in there from a fishes point of view), but also from memory young yo-yo's are found in the upper reaches of thier natural habiat while adults are found lower down in the system. If my memory is serving me correctly then the smaller yo-yo could be just trying to get back to the "upper reaches" of its "stream.

If it is just a quarantine tank, and you don't mind the looks, you could try hanging a baby pen or breeding pen at the back of the tank under the filter. I would be concerned that putting pantyhose over the filter could obstruct the water flow out and cause a small leak out of the tank.

I used to have white cloud mountain fish that loved to swim "upstream" into my filter!
