Ok may sound dumb to some but having put the uncured rockin the tank its started growing a brown fine blanket type algee which im asuming is normal as all the water tests are within the right parmeters, any one knowif this is right?

If you just recently put the water in, its prolly diatoms which are normal. If ammonia/nitrite are 0 and nitrate is <20 you can go ahead and add some cleanup crew to munch on them :)

thanks for that was starting to get worried it was something that shouldnt be there, seems to grow quite quickly but as im away for next 6 weeks will only have lights on for about 4 hours overnight which im hoping will help control this, and as there is only LR in there shouldnt need much care while im away and as lighting will onlybe on at night should help keep evapouration to a minimum

Wait a sec, you're leaving for 6 weeks and not doing a single water topoff? That unfortunately is not a good idea. Anyway you can put some water in the tank and ask whomever is picking up the mail/paper to just pour some water in?

there shouldnt be a major requirement to top up as lighting will only be on for a few hours overnight so shouldnt get that warm plus dont forget over in uk its never that warm so ambient temp wont b a major issue, besides if it needs topping up someone will aways be about

Phew, ok. Even with low lighting and moderate temps, evaporation will occur over 6 weeks, enough to drastically raise salinity without topoffs. It doesnt have to be done daily, but make sure somebody keeps it from getting crazy low :)

I had thought about it for some time and done some reseach into lighting times and if it made a difference to the LR but appears best solution is to light overnight when ambient temp is lowest and only then for a few hours, have just posted another topic regarding RO water which you may be able to advise on, being that i have to buy RO water at mo to top up how long will water be ok stored in a sealed water container for before i ditch it and get fresh stuff?
