I am moving about 100 pounds of older live rock into a fresh water tank. I got them from someone who took down a salt water tank. I need to clean these rocks, obviously...

Can I just bleach them in water with some bleach and then rinse them to death? Anyone think that would be a problem? It is either that or boiling them. Anyone have any suggestions? These are great decorations and I want to use them in a bad way.

I dont think you can put live rock into freshwater tanks.

why would you want to "kill" live rock?! sell it and use (a small fraction of) the money to buy normal rocks. It's worth a fortune!

The problem with adding live rock to freshwater tanks is it will 'kill off' alot of the bacteria on the rock causing a massive ammonia spike in your tank.
Granted, it's been out of water for a week so most stuff will have already died but I would do what idlefingers says and sell it! Uncured live rock still sells well.

Post this in the marines section. You'll have grown men and women crying. And then some offers for the rock!

That rock is for marine tanks. If you put it in fresh water, you'll kill off anything that's living in it. Then you'll be left with just rocks.

If you put it in fresh water, not only will you kill the live rock which, as said, is worth a lot of money, but the rock will leach calcium into your tank and act as a PH buffer. You will probably not be able to get your PH below 8.

For info, good live rock sells for anything between £8 - £12 per kilo. You have got a few hundred quid there. :good:

i must agree :( sell it to someone who can use it in their marine tank. live rock is very expensive - has cost me over $500 for a 75gallon and a 25gallon nano.

However, if it is a week out of water it is no longer liverock, but reef bones (as everything will die upon being dry). I wouldn't bother trying to sell it if it is dry. Would make good rock for a great lake cichlid tank, or any brackish tank.

Agreed.
