If you just have live rock in the tank no corals etc, do you need to have the lighting on??

nope although without it your coraline algea will die off. ( not always a bad thing.)

You don't need light for just for live rock and fish (just for viewing if you want).

You need adequate light if your keeping coral. Especially photosynthetic ones.

There are different types of coraline. Pink and purple are just some. Some do well in light some do well in the dark.
