Hi,

After a bit of thought we have decided to put a few live plants into our tank now.

What plants should we look out for given the following information ?

TANK : 50 gallon.

COMMUNITY fish only.

SUBTRATE : Gravel

PH 7.0

Most, if not all mosses would be good I think. They're very easy to grow.

Java Fern, Anubias, Mosses, Cabomba, Elodea, Cryptocoryne and Vallis are all pretty easy plants that should get their nutrients from the fish waste in your tank providing the lighting is kept to no more than 8 hours a day.

John.

This realy needs to go into the Planted tank section.

As you are just starting out I would recomend a fast growing easy to look after plant such as Cabomba Carolina. A very popular aquarium plant owing to its beautiful foliage & easy to grow nature. If your lighting is poor then try Limnophila sessiliflora, which requires less light.

Google, easy aquarium plants, & see what you fancy.

Hi,

Thanks for the information.

Is it a case of just going down to my LFS, or should we look elswhere for the name of plants suggested ?

Also,do we just plant these plants in the gravel and let things take care of themselves,or is there a correct way of doing things ?

John.

The Anubias and Java Fern (and obviously the moss) need to be attatched to wood or rocks as they need to have their roots exposed tot he water column. All the others are fine to be planted in the substrate. :)

If your LFS is half decent and stocks some half decent plants then you should be able to pick them up there. If not then there are several online stockists that specialise in them. :good:

Why dont you post the same question here? http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/forum/10-plants-and-planted-tanks/ It is or forum devoted to live plants & the planted aquarium. Those guys know their onions.

Hi,

I will do exactly that.

John.

I add that they sell packs of bulb plants that you can search through and buy the box with the most bulbs for 4 bucks. If you get 4 plants, that's a buck each. And save the sales slip. If any of the bulbs don't grow, you can send them to the MFG. and gett free replacements.
