I'm staring on live foods and was wondering which two would be the easiest to culture and raise as a constant food supply for my fish? Platys, guppies & their fry? I'll be supplementing these foods with flakes to give them a varied diet.

I've heard microworms and grindal worms are easy to culture, but also that they're too small for my adult fish and are geared towards the fry more....how about blackworms, they look awfully big!

I've also heard mixed stories about daphnia...some people say that they have more than they can handle and others say they culture enough for a weekly snack for their fish. I don't have much space so if I do decide to have a daphnia culture, it'll have to be in a bucket. And they'll be fed with yeast, not green water.

Anyone have any opinions? I'm really looking for an easy source of food for my adult fish...so hopefully a lot of you have had experience with the blackworm culture and have tips for me!

Thanks.

i still havent recieved my brine shrimp eggs, but they seem to be fairly easy and they look real cool. your kids (if you have any) would prolly like them too, brine shrimp is also known as "sea monkeys"

Good luck with daphnia, I'm on my fifth or sixth attempt at culturing it. But some people have great luck with it! I'm seriously hoping to have success this time because it's a great source of food. I can never get my greenwater situation right.

With that said- I think grindals would be perfect for you as well. Some get quite large and my adult bettas always ate them, I'm sure grown mollies and guppies will too. Microworms are itty, itty bitty. Practically micro! Your fry wouldn't be interested in them too long, and livebearer fry are born quite big anyway. But you could always culture both.

blackworms are huge, and gross if you ask me. Some swear by them but they're a lot of work!

Yea, the whole culturing blackworms with shredder paper and whatnot isn't very appealing.

But if you say your grindal cultures get big enough for your bettas...I should give it a shot for my fry.

Microworms, grindals, frozen, and flakes...should be enough variety for them, I hope.
