I have had some pieces of Sumatra driftwood in my tank for about a week (currently cycling), but I think I noticed a couple of dots of white fluff on them today. Is this common, and what did I do wrong?

I read somewhere else:

New drift wood has to undergo a bacterial succession. The first colonisers of drift wood are the white fluffy stuff. After a while you will notice that this will disappear (cause another species of bacteria has out competed it) It will not harm your fish at all.
So do I just leave it? Worried it'll get worse.

Yup, just let it be and all should be fine. It may be unsightly for a while, but it will pass. Same thing happens to me when I put new wood in my tank, and it always goes away in a weeks time or two.

i had a piece of bogwood in a tank for over a year (with no white fluff), then transfered it to a different (new) tank and it ended up covered in white fluff. it will go after a while as FHM says, but i boiled mine and gave it a good scrub and the white fluff hasn't come back since

Ok, well it's literally a couple of spots about 3mm in diameter. They're not particularly fluffy or anything, but I can see them growing into fluff. Good to know I don't have to worry.

BTW, do plecos or shrimp clear fungus from wood by eating it?
