Sorry to hear your fish isn't doing so well.

I'm far, far, far from an expert, but at least I can share my experiences with you. I just got my very first betta; he also developed holes in his tail, and I took him to see a specialist ~ ~ My Betta probably got his holes from a female that bit back when he was chasing her. The expert also told me that sometimes they nip at their own tails, due to stress.

He's been under plenty of stress lately, or maybe I'm the one who's been under stress because of him Either way, in my case it turned out not to be a disease. I'm treating the holes now, so that his fins will be all better and beautiful again, in time.

The expert checked his water quality, and gave him a very thorough exam, looking for various diseases. The bottom line is that I did purchase some BetaFix, because it's an antibacterial remedy, good for treating of a bunch of pretty common Betta problems. At least that's what the expert said, and that's what the package says!

It also helps fins and skin to grow back more quickly-- which is exactly what we want right now. As I toldya.. I'm no expert-- but I did realise that it's a good idea to have some kind of first-aid kit on hand "just in case." That way, you don't have to run around at the last second like I did, when time can really matter, trying to get the right stuff with which to treat your pal there. If you do have BetaFix on hand, I'd clean his tank and use it right away; it certainly can't hurt, and probably will help-- at least until you find out what's wrong with him. If you don't have BettaFix, I'd just clean his tank for now, and get some real help (and BetaFix to have on hand in the future) as soon as possible.

There are stronger treatments for real serious problems, and I wish I could help you more. The important thing is not to wait until you just can't make him better. Most likely, you can find your answers in the wealth of information posted on this site! There are also lots of pictures on the web showing diseases, including fin-rot. Just put "betta +fin rot" into the search option of your browser. In fact, there's probably a few posts here telling all about it!

has he been flaring much recently? male bettas have a tendency to blow out their fins as a result of too much flaring. Its harmless and should close up in a day or two. A small amount of melafix, bettafix, or aquarium salt should help keep the holes clean until then, but really they are not generally a problem and as long as you keep the water in the tank clean will heal up quite readily.

thanks for the help guys. i do have some pimafix on hand but i refuse to use it after i read that a ingredient in it is known to cause cancer and birth defects. the holes are just very tiny,like a pin-pricked him in a couple spots. hes in a 3 gallon heated tank, i put some aquarium salt in every time i cahnge his water. i guess i can start changning it more often and see if that helps.
