I have a Sunset Platy that seems to just sits mainly at the top of the tank sometimes at the bottom, hardly moving with her fins into her body, the only time she moves from there is if somebody disturbs her or if its feeding time when she is at the feeding ring like a shot

Any ideas? I think she might be pregnant but not 100% sure can see a gravid spot but its that dark.

Somebody has suggested that I put her in a tank on her own with a little bit of salt, is this a good idea and if so how much salt do I use? Also if I do this how do I get the salt residue out of my hospital filter if one of my Cory’s gets ill as I know they don’t like salt? Or would it not be enough in there to bother them?

How long has she been like this? Could she be about to give birth?

Also, could we have the usual tank stats, size tank, no of fish, ammonia and nitrite readings?

Also, there may be a curse on Southampton, as several Soton platies have been experiencing similar problems within the last few days (see other threads).

She’s been like it for about a week but seems to be getting worse, she is looking a little plumper than usual but not really fat.

Stats are Ammonia – 0, Nitrite – 0, tank is 216L apx 4ft long, 20% water change once a week, other fish include 7 other Platy’s all ok, Neon, Cardinal and Blue Tetra’s, Red Tailed Black Shark, Plec, Common Loach, and Pakistani Loach.

Everybody else seems ok.

Have hear about the curse of Southampton, as it was yourself and my other half that were discussing it when her fish was ill earlier this week :D (not the same tank though)

If her fins are clamped to her body she is stressed, she dosn't sound right to me, what do you feed the fish, what does it look like when she goes to the toilet.

Feed them twice a day, flake at least once sometimes twice but normally at lunchtime then they have either some algae based tablet and about twice a week they get frozen Bloodworm or Daphnia or Brine Shrimp, have tried them on peas but none of my fish seem to like them not mater how I serve them, cooked or uncooked :dunno: thought Platy's were mad for them.

Now you come to mention it i'm not sure if I have seen her go to the toilet for a day or so, before that it was normally ok but a couple of times a little stringy.

Can you issolate her, stringy white poo can mean a number of things, bacterial infection, internal parasites and constipation, cook some peas for a few minutes let cool, then pop out of shell and squeeze between fingers till mushy, sometimes it takes a few goes to get them eating them, i would introduce abit more varied diet into the menu, livebearers like veg and it fetches there colour out better.

Have got another tank but its not up and running yet, just trying to seed ther filter at the moment in the main tank, hope to get it up and running this weekend. Till then all we have is a breeding trap, is it worth putting her in there, even though she would still be in the main tank?

When we isolate her in the new tank is there anything we can do.give her to help?

The tank dosn't need to be seeded you can keep an eye on water quality daily taking test results, then just preform water changes, i would try and get some shelled peas down her, is she still eating.

Yep she's still eating, in fact she's the first one at the feed-ring at feeding time :D and full of life thats what i dont understand. As for the peas my girlfriend is in the kitchen as i type cooking them for her :D

Good luck, with livebearers being pregnant all the time i takes it's toll on the fish, thats why it's very wise to keep them on a very good varied diet, to cope with having baby fry all the time, and keep them going to the toilet.

What else can we give other than peas? they still are not sure about them, but the Tetra's seem to like them :D

We have bought some Spirulina Algae tablets which we were told were for livebearers and says it a all vegetable supplement, which they seem to like, but they prefer the Tetra Plecomin which also has the same type of algae. Is this ok?
