hello. as most of you will probably know my female is in a 4 liter container floating in my main tank (breeding tank) with the male. when the male goes up to the container and he sees her he flares his gills at her and what i want to know is my female done the same back to him. is this normal.
thanks.

wait, your planning on breeding bettas, and you don't know what a flare is???
have you read the pinned topic in the betta FAQ section???? it helped me loads with my first spawn.

yes i do know what a flare is but ive just never read about a female doing it. i released the female from the container today as the male had built his bubble nest over night but nothing seems to be happening. she is in condition. she got chased by the male up to the bubble nest very fast and in shock she skipped sharply away recking his bubble nest. i have decided to return her to the container and let him rebuild his bubble nest in peace and she can relax. this way the female will ovulate better and can eat in peace and he can see her but not get to her so builds his bubble nest. i have floated like a mayonase lid on the surface because i have heared the males like to put their bubble nests in anything floating then around that i have some floating plant. i might go out today and get another male and female as backup. any hints on what to do next would be useful
thanks

Flareing in a female is a good sign.... espicaly if you want to breed them.
Personaly i leave the female in for 3-4 days (if plenty of cover), if they have not breed in that time then something is worng, either the male or the female is not right.

Even poor spawners need practice and the first 2-3 spawns resualt in almost nothing. And once you get eggs, males oftn eat the fry at free swimming stage.

So have fun.

woo lol. she is out and always swims away from him its like a high speed persuit lol but there was one point were the female jammed herself behind the transparent floating container and the male seen her and got right up next to her and she never darted n he stood stationary with his gills flared looking at her for about 5 secs.
thanks for all your replies keep them coming

correct. I was in fact going to say that you shouldn't because they are normally too old which may also explain why things aren't quite going right. Also most pet shop bettas are VT's which are hard to home once you are ready to sell them on. I would recomend getting a quality pair to spawn.

In addition to that black molly3 if you feel the need to breed then do it, just give them some time once she is in there, i had a pair together for 5 days before the job was done. but please have every thing you need ready :good:

today the male has been wrapping himself around her for about 10 secs and then letting go and the female looks like an S shape then he pushes her and she goes back to normal and he done it again. this is breeding right. but i didnt see no eggs come out of her and i have only seen him return to the bubble nest once he has been hovering by his bubble nest for a while but moves sometimes. do youi think there wil be eggs in there. i dont know how many times they have done it or when they started but he kept wrapping himself around her. his bubble nest is at the back which is quite a pain but its ok. thanks for replies

well that defo them breeding the eggs arnt to small look like large sand slowy falling down, the male will then collect them on the drop coat them with oil and put them in the nest.

View the nest from above and you should see white spots in the nest. If you cant use a magnifying glass that will help.

The male will now grad the nest and pick up eggs as they fall out for 2-3 day's till they hatch.

Have you read the pinned topics on breeding Bettas? If not, then it is definitely worth reading them and doing plenty of research before attempting to breed.
Have you got everything you need if the spawn is successful?

no not quite yet i have only got about 60 jars so far but vi should find more lingering around. should i leave the lights on or turn them off. will this help with the humidity in the tank for the fry. i dont know if they have put the eggs in the nest i cant realy see but i dont want to disturb them
thanks
