I just found a fry in my tank! :hyper:

I have one guppy who I suspected was pregnant, but I wasn't sure. And tonight I was just about to go to bed (it's 11:30pm) and I noticed this little fry in my tank!

I have a 20g with 4 Zebra Danios and just one guppy female. Will the danios/guppy eat my fry???

I've only found one and it's awesome, i don't want it to die. :-( I've checked in my filter (it's a penguin bio-wheel) and I didn't see anything, so I've only found one so far... Is it possible she's still in the dropping process? Is it all at once or over time? What should I do? I don't have a net, nor a bucket but I have some one gallon water bottles that I use to change the tanks. I don't know what to do. Should I put the fry into the water bottles? Need help quixorz thanks.

it is possible but i think the danios will make quick work of eating any fry she may have had or is having. also guppies are fairly cannibalistic so its no likely that your fry will make it without adequate plant cover or hiding places. i used to have an inch of large gravel at the bottom of my tank and i don't think Ive ever had as many fry survive since i switched to sand. also it seems like about an hour after the fry are born they venture to the surface for some reason ad that is also when they get picked off. try a combination of floating plants and dense ground cover.

also if noon of these fry live don't worry! theres a good chance the mother will give birth again even tho theres no males in the tank. they can give birth 3 times after just one encounter with a male.

thanks djdotnet, it's good to know that there's always another possibility for more. For now, now being too late at night since I should be sleeping or studying for my final tomorrow, now I'm just collecting the fry and putting them into a 1g H20 bottle.

I saw the danios scouring the gravel and picking at it so I got angry at them and put them in the other 1g bottle. I figured if the fry die i'd rather be the one to kill them rather than those danios. I have 2 fry in there already, I'll see if I find any more.

Looked in tank more, investigated potential hiding places, found nothing. So, I'm going to keep the fry in the 1g for a few days or something. Thing is, I have to leave out of town overnite soon, so Sunshine, it was really bad timing.

Any rate, I got 2 fry out of this fiasco. I had fry before in my 44g, but that was almost five years ago. So I guess you could say I'm new to this fry buissness and it's kindof neat. I hope the fry live.

About the tank setup, I'm still confused about whether or not a 10,000k power-compact flouro is good for aquatic plants. The plants will reign supreme in the tank, I assure u of that. So anyway, I'm thinking of trading in those danios and getting some more guppies and just do that until I get bored with it. That's what I did last time, I had a guppie tank then I put in a few needlenose gars and some archerfish and I didn't have to worry about the guppies anymore.

Okay, maybe I'll find some more fry in the morning, which is... not far from now... probably not.

I think your fry eater was the danios as they will find the fry easy prey.MAke sure you put heavy vegetation cover to prevent furthur lost of fry.The mother would not be able to eat until there was so few fry left as guppies do not have a big appetite
