Is it essential to have a light over a betta tank (Newbie question i know)

most of my tanks do not have a light but they do get natural sunlight ( when it is sunny in england) is this enough ???

Unless you have live plants there is no reason to have a light. One of my bettas gets stressed out in bright light, he now is the center piece on the kitchen table.

Yeah... I think it's better to have a light so you can observe your betta for any signs of illness. My Max's tank is pretty bright in natural light - but it's still hard to see him without the overhead tank light. With that light - I can see everything and notice if he's ill.

Was also going to add that incandescent lighting usually heats the water... if it's at all possible... flourescent is best.

P.S. I love your little betta cartoon character!! Where did you get that??!! He's sooo cute!!
