I have a 125 litre juwel tank with 2 x 28 w bulbs. The tiger barbs dont like the bright lights and seem to hide away and come out again when the lights are turned off. Any suggestions of alternative lights or how to cover one of the lights?

Thanks

the lights shouldnt be a problem really, make sure you have enough decor in the tank to make them feel secure. Usually, tiger barbs are not shy, or skittish, so, check your water quality, as that could be an issue..

or.. what other fish do you have in the tank?

try some floating plants to offer some shade.

I also found that adjusting the lighting times to fit more with natural daylight also helped. Probably because I used to have the lights off during the day when I wasn't in and on when I was (mainly evenings). Think the fish couldn't differentiate between night and day so slept whenever

It's best to build having the lights up gradually when fish are not used to them.
Start off with half and hour, and build it up over the coming weeks.

When I had vallis growing on the top the tiger barbs seemed to be swimming a lot more and much more active. Will kitchen foil cover the lightd and will it be safe?

Tin foil just reflects the light down into the tank I think.
Tin foil pretty safe. Alot fo fish keepers use it if they don't have a reflector.

could always buy a dimmer socket i bought 1 from ebay for £5.50 you just plug your lights into it and you can regulate how bright your lights are
