i'm wondering how long to keep my light on for

i have to turn it off at night because i cant sleep with it on

how long shall i keep it on? i have white cloud mountain minnows if its any help?

Normally 6-8 hours is recommended because more normally results in an algae problem. IMO If you have no plants, and have no algae then your regime right now is fine

i read some where that the fish dont even need the light, its entierly for out viewing pleasure and for the plants...

i read that the fish actually perfer the light off

Yes, I would agree it's more for the plants and the owners.

The ideal amount I guess will be if you have green algae or not. If you do, then cut down the lights on time.
