Now I don't even know where to start how to work out what watts I have per gallon/litre. Can some one please point me in the right direction as I want to and CO2 to my tank.

Tank size: 30"long x 15"depth x 18" high.

Light: sun-glo 20w 24"

Question is do I have enough light to use CO2, because I keep reading in other posts that if you haven't got enough watts per gallon its pointless?

Edit:My tank is 29.2 uk gallons. If that helps anyone.

please help i'm a loss old fool :S

Your tank is 35 (US) gallons, and you have 20 watts of lighting. You have just about 0.6 watts per gallon, not enough to grow most plants, but I'm sure you'll be able to grow low light requiring plants such as java fern and java moss.

You'll need to get at least 70 watts before adding CO2 becomes a nessesity. Try looking arounf at your local hardware store for lighting fixtures, you can't fit a 3 foot fixture in there, but then again, I'm not sure what sizes lighting fixtures come for. And try to get as much as you can, no point getting the minimum wpg for your plants, I'd shoot for 3 to 4 wpg, that is if you really want to plant your tank and the fish you have don't mind the light.

So basically i need at least 4 x 20 watt tubes.
