Life Expectancy

Hiya just was wondering about this, How long can bettas live? I've heard 6months - 2years, but im sure its longer as ive heard people on here having theres alot longer!
Does anyone know how long they can live for, or is it down to how their owner looks after them?
Also how do you know how old a betta is just by looking at it?

2-3 years but some old timers get upto 9-10 years. They get more lethargic as they get older.

Mine was 6 years old when he died. I don't think your average betta gets to be 10 years old.

3-6 is good. YET lots of these new ones you see in the pet stores are NOT as hardy as they were 13 years ago when I first started keeping bettas. I swear all the inbreeding has really shortened the average life span of these fish.
