Just thought I would check this nugget of probably useless information but I was informed guppy fry are usually 90% female in any birthing. Is this a pile of tosh? Thanks :)

u do generally get more females than males IME, but not 90 %, id say like 75%

Depends. In my last lot I had about 60% males. We have had threads trying to work out how individual members' temperature/tank parameters etc affect the sex ratio but have never been able to keep going long enough. 90% seems very high though. Could it simply be that the lfs tend to sell their fry at an age when they still mostly look like females?

It's generally a significant difference in the population, unlike humans. I would say 70% females is a pretty good average for population. Maybe there is something about males that gets them eaten faster in the wild too.

this is just a random thought but maybe the addition of a little salt could change the sex of them
but i have no idea if it would, just an idea
then again... maybe they just come out as more females most of the time because they just...do lol

i tend to get 90% female but i keep them in an unheated tank, some people think a higher temperature will produce more males :dunno:

My temp is around 20oC and tend to have 70% female.

The LFS was selling pregnant females. It was not my usual pet store as I had gone in for airline clips and went to have a look at their tanks as they as not so good at housing fish correctly (poor bettas) and I was just quizzing a poor shop assistant who I have talked to in the past about betta conditions etc. It in an interesting debate though long may it continue....
