I'm in Planted School.
I bought some fish recently that had internal and external parasites that are proving very medication resistant. I have sick fish now in both of my large tanks. They are getting worse and worse, and I'm losing fish one by one after almost two months. One fish is actually getting better, which gave me hope, but thats one out of 20. I'm thinking about starting fresh, with a nice qt tank up and running.
What steps should I take to make sure the tanks are safe? I am having a hard time thinking up a good plan on what I should do, and don't want to miss anything that could infect new fish when I begin again.
1. I need to keep my plants. I spent more money there then on the fish {though that is a huge financial hit as well.}
2. If the filters need to be sterilized, I will silent cycle one tanks and fishless cycle the largest.
I have until May 15th to help the fish I have now, If there is no visible improvement, They are getting dumped on the fish store that charged me $100 for fish that started dying 3 days later and infected my two large tanks.
I would appreciate your thoughts on making sure the tanks are safe to begin again. I also wonder if I could remove the fish, keep the filter cycled with ammonia, and treat the water at that point. There wouldn't be any hosts for the parasites, and then the medication could kill anything left?
I'm sorry if I sound harsh about the fish. I have done everything I can for them other them let them slowly die off in my tank. I'm miserable, and need to do something. I am still trying for a month....
