Hi to everyone

I'm David. 34 years old from East Lothian, Scotland, but born and Brought up in Edinburgh. I'm totally new to fish keeping ( if you discount the goldfish I had as a child ).

I have really wanted to keep tropical fish for many years and finally after lots of nagging/psychological seed planting etc etc, my better half shocked me a few weeks ago by saying I can get a tank for my Christmas. I couldn't believe my ears. After confirming that she wasn't winding me up, I have spent hours and hours reading up and measuring up in the house to see how big I can go. Living in a flat with not a great deal of space to play with, and having to resist the temptation of suggesting my partner get rid of some of her stuff to allow me to accommodate a bigger tank, I / we have decided on the Fluval Roma 90L with the new style cabinet.

I will get it on Christmas Day and the fun will then begin although, now that I am on the steep learning curve of a fish keeper, I realise the hard work I will have to do before considering putting fish in the tank. I will no doubt have many questions, most of them stupid ones, but look forward to starting what looks to be a great hobby.

All the best,

David.

Hey David, welcome to the forum! :good: It's fantastic to hear that you're doing your research first :D It'll save you a lot of hassle in the long term. If you click on the link in my signature it'll take you to our Beginners Resource Centre where you'll be able to find any information you could possibly need about cycling a tank. And if you're not sure about anything, head on over to the "Your New Freshwater Tank" section where people will be able to help you out, and don't worry, any question about starting up is never a stupid question! :good:

Hi Flute,

Thanks for the welcome. Had a quick look at the beginners resource centre thanks. That an amazing source of info there making me think I might not need to ask as many questions as I first thought.

I've read up a bit on cycling and think ill probably do a fish-less cycle when the time comes. In the meantime I'm also looking into the huge variety of fish available along with comparability etc and making a short list of the types I'd like in my tank. I'll then whittle them down to a reasonable and healthy number because at the moment my so called short list contains about half of all known species.

David.

Welcome to the forum mate, now all the fun begins with planning and fish choice :)

research what you would like to keep, this is a addictive hobby, i started with a 36x18x12 now i have a 4x2x2 Discus aquarium and a fish house. I must be MAD

Thanks for all the welcomes folks.

Ian, my missus took years of work to finally cave to get this tank so I think this'll be as big as it gets although, I bet that's what you said when you started.

Jen, I just can't choose. There's so many beautiful and interesting fish out there. How do you decide? And since starting my research I see things like shrimp, snails etc. I want it all lol.

JT. Yes, I knew about the welsh saying David as Dai (pronounced 'Die' for anyone that isn't aware. I went on holiday about 15 years back and was introduced to a friend of a friend. My mate said to his mate, "this is David", he then turned to me and said "Die". I was genuinely frightened for my life until they explained lol. Good luck to your team tomorrow night, even though I'm a jambo.

For me mate it's quite easy, im a plec and cory person with a keen interest in shrimp.... but ive found the best method for choosing is have a look at almost every genre of fish, see what takes your fancy and search or ask question on compatibility..... you will have more tanks soon enough anyways ;) lol.... so you can have all the fish you like
