Leoperd Cory With Red Around It's Eye

DEAD

It's died within a few hours of you getting it home? Hmm.

Have you rung the fish shop yet? I suggest you get on to them ASAP... I can't think what would cause such an extreme reaction so fast though...

sorry to hear that the cory didnt make it
as curiosity said get on to the shop and let them know what has happened. they normally give 2 days for fish to survive so your still in that time but the sooner the better :good:

has the tank been fully cycled before adding any fish?

do you have your current stats?

Just how "mature" is your setup, fishy, as in how many weeks (or months/years) did your tank complete "cycling" with zero ammonia and nitrite readings daily?

Having just checked out your profile, at the very least you have bought...

  • 2 Platies
  • 6 Kuhli Loaches
  • A single (?) Cory
since 30th July!

If your tank is recently cycled, that could put an awful amount of pressure on your vital bacterial colonies. Especially in the early weeks, its best not to add new fish within a fortnight of each other and that's if all has been perfect.

I'm wondering how you went about acclimitising your cory to your tank and over how much time?

I'm wondering why, on the face of it, you only came home with one... When a tiny bit of research would have told you they are very social and need to be in groups of at the very least five (although this point has little bearing on such a sad, rapid death).

If your tank is less than six weeks mature, I'm wondering why the fish shop let you buy what are notoriously sensitive fish.

I'm sorry for your loss, despite perhaps coming across rather bluntly in my post

i wouldnt say that corydoras are "notoriously sensitive fish", they are to things like salt and some medications but ive never found them to be hard to acclimatise....

6 x kuhli loaches will hardly put a scratch into the bioload of the filter and a single cory shouldnt as both of these are very low waste producers. they will of course contribute to the load but not massively.

there could also be reasons behind bringing a single cory home, maybe the shop only had 1 left... maybe the op couldnt afford 6 or 7 and was going to build up a group weekly.

we really need to know about the water stats and cycling though...... :good:

The OP said that the inhabitants of this tank are some guppy fry and the corys...
So actually this fact is meaningless on it's own without knowing exactly how many tanks to OP has, how far along they are cycling wise... whether they seeded new tanks with old media etc.

I too wouldn't say corys are overly sensitive... and also based on how fast it went downhill I wouldn't presume it's the tank water that's at fault. More likely it came to the OP in a bad condition.

Having said all that... I would like to know what the tank stats are aswell. Just to rule them out.

By "notoriously sensitive fish", I'm referring to them being a rather risky fish to add to a "fish-in cycling" and a cycled tank with less that six weeks existance. ;)

Fishy recently wrote a thread about her Kuhlis not eating, which opens up the possibility that too much food was being put in the tank while they were settling in, potentially creating ammonia issues. In a mature tank where fish are not being fed excessive food, I agree, the bioload from six Kuhlis would be minimal.

Maybe its just me, but I cannot ever imagine bringing home a single specimen of any fish, when I have researched a little about its needs and discovered it is a social species (unless of course I already had a group of said fish in my tank already). But as I wrote originally, this issue cannot explain why a Cory has died within hours of being added to Fishy's tank.

both tanks have been set up over a year, the one the corys went in only had guppies in.
i brought 3 of them, when i got more money im gonna buy another 2/3.

I have rang the shop they said that they will replace it, so maybe get another 1-2 tomorrow?
ill see if i can afford it

good news well done. just be sure to double check the corys in the lfs tank for any other infections etc. if you need to check them over in the bag before you leave the shop :good:

woke up this morning oother 2 died, went to lfs and they gave me replacements, and gave me 4 of them and i only borught 3 day b4.
they look a lot happier, they are swimming alot better

i would do a good water change and substrate clean just for good measure. i hope these new corys do well for you :good:
