welp after having my 48"t5ho fixture with no co2, i can officially say im an algae farmer!

Looking to downgrade the lighting for as little as possible.
Also trying to make it fit on the pop up hood of the canopy which alows 2-3" of space between the light and the water.....

Any suggestions? I will be making this a lowlight planted tank with crap loads of java fern and java moss and anubias.

the tank is 48" long by 18" (i think) wide...

The best thing to do is to downgrade to a T8 luminaire. The LED's on the market that are any good are HO Leds's which are on a level with T5's.

How many tubes are there in it? Can you take some out? That'd be cheap.

there are 2 bulbs.... could i just keep one of the brighter plant specified bulbs and change the other to a more so larger spectral bulb to show off some fish color?

You'll need to drop the brightness altogether. Either run one bulb, or, if they're 54W bulbs you could switch them for 28W ones. May still be cheaper than a new system altogether, although Ian's advice would certainly do the job for dropping the light and leaving you the selection of tubes wide open.
