Lazy Or Sick

I just put a floating lily pad in with my red boy and now he lays on top of it (half out of the water to sleep) is this normal I mean there are other plants in the tank he could rest on and he does but he like to lay on the lily pad for a long long time
he is active and eats well the water is clean and heated why is he coming half way out fo the water?

i dont see why not. i mean as long as he is in the water.

I've never heard of that before...it should be interesting if anyone has a comment on that. It is normal for bettas to like to lie on plants. Most of my boys are really energetic for the most part but I have a lazy boy that would prefer to just lie on plants...none of mine are lilly pads so they're never halfway out of the water. Just in case though, I'd pull that plant out and put it somewhere else. He might accidentally get too far up the plant somehow and not be able to flop back in the water or something.

well i dont think the plant is the issure more less the betta jumping out. one of my girls lasted 2 hours out of water and recovered 100%, and i have a girl betta that lies on the top of some riccia about 1/3 way out of the water.

Regardless of the issue...the plant needs to be removed IMO, and no betta should ever be at risk of being completely out of the water for any extended amount of time. I still recommend getting rid of the plant and trying some other types of floating plants.

I raised the water level abit so he is only 1/3 out of the water when he lays on the lily pad The lilly pad is also on a stick so it is completely submerged in the water not floating on the top. He has built a bubble nest now (right above where he lays on the lily pad ) I dont want to remove the plant as I think he is in love with it.

I didnt know that bettas could be this lazy lol. oh well

My other Male has started doing something similar (at night) with his plants too but he is really really active in the daytime so I am not too concerned and the other guy doesnt have part of his body out of the water just his mouth I think its so he can breathe without moving though lol lazy

I should mention that both are fairly fat lol Thank you everyone
