I was just watching my tank up close and noticed a little thing swimming around. My first thought was "Gah! Insect larvae!" Then I looked closer. I'm not sure what it was. I still have a feeling it was insect larvae.

It was tiny (obviously), maybe 2mm long and seemed to be 2 eyes on the end of a slender body. No real features other than that. It was clinging onto the glass seemingly. I would of got a better look, if one of my pentazona barbs didn't swim up and casually eat it  Can't see any more at the moment.

I have Harlequin Rasboras, Pentazona barbs and Leopard danios in the tank. Danios and rasboras are the only ones to have shown any spawning activity, though the pentazonas seem to be colouring up nicely I've just noticed (getting ready to breed maybe?)

Am I correct in assuming it was an insect?

Well, several weeks on, and I found 2 more! I've managed to catch them and put them in a breeding net. They look a tiny bit bigger than the first one I saw (not much bigger though) and were swimming more like fish. They're currently in a breeding net! I really hope they survive and grow! Had a bit of a crappy weekend with most of my "Easy to grow" plants melting on me, aling with a big hair algae outbreak :(

They're growing quite nicely now. They've been in the breeding net for a about 2 1/2 weeks and they have some colouration on them. Mostly silver black, but still too small to see a proper patern. Anyway, I'm almost certain they are danio fry :) Hopefully they'll be females! I could do with some more females, and its nice to boost the numbers a little (only have 4 adults at the moment).

My next problem is going to be rehoming them to a fry tank! I could do with some advice on setting up a spnge filter. I know how they work etc but its really a case of knowing what sort of power air pum would I need to run one (it'll be in a 7 gal tank).

Just take a peice of pvc pipe, stick a airstone in it, and block of both ends with filter floss  Easiest way there is. Make sure it is cycled, or are you looking for somthing that has cycled gravel in it? Just use a small 7 dollar pump( 3.5 quid for u britt's).
