I have a 42 gallon aquarium. I am in the middle of cycling the tank.
What is the largest fish you would suggest that I get once I am finished cycling my tank?
The dimensions of the tank are 12"dX18"hX36"w.

I depends what the fish is how much it moves naturally, what you woud keep with it and filtration amongst other things.

CFC is the big fish dude around here, I'm sure he'll help out.

Why do you want a big fish? Do you have something in mind?

The largest fish i would recomend for your tank would be between 6 and 8 inches but this is also dependent on what species it is, fast swimming and schooling fish will require more room than a sedentry loner.

I don't necessarily want large fish. I want to have a community fish tank. I'm new to fish keeping and I would like to do it right. I don't want to kill a ton of fish in the process. I would like some colorful fish.
My son and I saw a Rope fish in the store, but then I read up on it and found that they grow to about 36" long.
As for your filtration comment. I have an external Whisper 60 filter, and a UGF with 3 air supply tubes.

Thank you for your advice Chees Specialist and CFC
