I dont agree that Bristlenose completely mess up a tank and you cant keep them with plants sucessfully as mentioned above
I have kept mine in my planted tank since the beginning with no problems and he keeps the tank really clean. He does not eat the leaves as I feed him cucumber and algae wafers. In fact my Clown loach are far more destructive towards plants than the bristlenose.
With regard to the substrate, obviously it is far better to have a proper one, but I have had amazing results with just gravel by just getting my lighting, co2 and trace elements such as Seachem flourish etc right.
If my bristlenose was destructive and you had to have laterite substrate then I would not have a rich plant growth tank (that I have to prune every couple of days):
I also have zero Algae now !!
