I was at the LFS the other day and all their plants were housed in plastic containers, they were not submered in water but only seemed to misted for moisture and the roots were planted in some unindentifiable substrate that looked like aquarium salt (though im sure it wasnt). the plants names were nondescript, things like "water fern" ..... as though that helps me any. i suspect these plants arent the real deal but they are being sold at multiple locations of a major pet store corporartion, so IDK id think theyd wana take care of theyr customers and not sell junk. does anyone know if thses types of plants are worth buying? cause if they are theyd make a really great deal (4 plants per container at a reasonable price)

Sounds like they were non-aquatic as you suggest, unfortuntaly is very common. I've even been in shops where they sell more non-aquatics than true aquatics!

I doubt there is much we can do about it, other than taking our business to shops that dont try to fool people, hell some shops even tell people they are non-aquatic and they still buy them !!!

Most aquatic plants came from emerged plants. Plantgeek has a good selection of non aquatic plants at the Plant Guide

:good: :good: that page is getting bookmarked! at a quick glance i already recognized one of the plants they sell and it is a land only plant, so i assume the rest cant be trusted to aquatic either. thanks much frozenbarb

when i first set my tank up i had this problem, bought some lovely plants and they turned out to be non aquatic and started falling to bits....so i went to maidenhead and requested them to show me the true aquatic plants which they did and was very helpful :)
(didn;t get the first lot from maidenhead)
