I have been doing a bit of research, they need alkaline conditions (which would figure if they are shell dwellers) My tap water is quite hard, so going in the right direction I think. They seem to be interesting little characters.

BTW I am in London but have not yet visited the Aquatic Design Centre. Is it worth a visit?

These fish were my fav fish from lake Tanzania and i loved them. They are best kept as a group - mine were in a group of 8 fish in a 30" tank. I had sand on the bottom and planty caves of flower pots and also some shells. These fish all seemed to pair up at the same time and all defended a small territory. It was great to see them all digging around in the sand - some were digging pits and putting the waste sand in other pits where the owners of the other pit would move the sand to another pit. It was great to watch and when yopung started to appear they seemed to be well looked after and i suffered few losses although i did move the young at around a month after i saw them.

Normal Lake Tanzania water conditions will suffice though these fish are quite adaptable and are able to take a lower ph and hardnes s level than is normally quoted. As long as ph is above around 7.4.
