Evening all, whilst on holiday i received a text from a work colleague whos uncle had a house fire that killed all power to the house. He owns a tank which he needed moved on asap due to the loss of power as mentioned.

So i got the text asking if i would be able to help. I asked the work colleague if he would be able to home the tank till i got home today and i would pick it up tomorrow which he said he could. So ......

Tomorrow i will be picking the following.

Tank
Aqua One AR620 with all equipment. I think the tank is 90 ltr

Stock
1 Jack Dempsey
1 Plec

So i know nothing of the fish or tank and was looking for any information on what i may need to do as in feeding / general care.

Also is this tank big enough for these fish ?

Im hoping i did the right thing taking the fish from him as i did not want them ending up in someones hands that did not really want them.

I will post some photos tomorrow when i get the tank.

Cheers LP

90l is way too small for those fish. On the other hand, both plecs and JDs are tough as old boots and don't need any specialist care; good food and plenty of filtration and water changes and they'll be fine (for the moment...).

I thought it would be to small for them. Unfortunately i have no other tanks to place them in. I will see how they are when i get them tomorrow and post some photos and then weigh up my options.

If need be i will have to take them to a LFS. But who knows who they would end up with and it what environment.

I would really like to keep them if i can. What size tank would be recommended for them individually and as a pair ?

Cheers

But who knows who they would end up with and it what environment.

To be quite honest the environment their in now is not suitable to them either. I feel your care for your fish but in reality they will do better in a bigger tank. ;)

You'll be alright Plates! Do you think your LFS could look after them while you try and source a bigger tank? (My LFS will temporarily home your fish for moving home etc if they have room)

Since im guessing they;ve been in the smaller tank for so long however, i dont think another week or two will kill them while you find them another home.

The plec will be better off than the Dempsy in there since it likely spends its time in one spot, but they're gonna have to get out of there as soon as you are able.

the plec should be ok in your 4 footer for a while, at least on a temp basis, depends on its current size really.

Cheers for the replies. With money the way it is at the moment i will struggle to get another large tank so i will get them here tonight then speak with the LFS or possibly ask on here if anyone is interested in them.

Why do people do this to fish !

Why do people do this to fish !

Largely down to ill guidance an education from LFS's. Sure, the owner should check up and research, but one would expect a LFS to give the proper advice would we not?

We know this doesnt happen, and thats how you end up with a Plec and a JD in a tank too small for even one of them!

The way i see it, at least they are now going to be with someone who has their best interests in mind, and will do what they can to help them, as no disrespect, it soulnd like their previous owner had no idea they were too big for their tank! (again, relates to the above...)

Perhaps get a post up (not sure where would be best) for a "foster" carer while you find a permanent home, or just find them a good perm settlement

I have just been onto my local Maidenhead Aquatics and they have said they can take them off my hands. They supplied me with a good sized bucket with a lid to transport them in as well.

When i told then the fish was in a 90ltr their jaws hit the floor !

Looks like i will take them there tomorrow. Im happy to do this as i feel they would not sell them to anyone without making sure they had the correct setup first.

Cheers

Well i have got the tank, setup and well ....

All i will say is i am glad the fish will be going to the LFS tomorrow. they are way to big for the tank as we agreed. Feel so sorry for them. The tank aswell is in need of a very good clean as it looks like he never did a really good job of looking after it.

After a good clean the tank will be ideal for a breeding / holding tank though.

I hope they get a good home.

I'm sure the LFS will only sell them to people who have the capabilities to buy them. It's a long shot but maybe you should ask if they will only sell them to people with a big enough tank.

Last night i changed 80% water after the journey and just to check i did a water test this morning. Ammonia = 0.50 of to the shop we go.

Im going scrub the tank down today after building some shelves in the garage and then turn it into a breeding tank after a fishless cycle.

LP

Why on earth are you doing a fishless cycle on it?

Just steal some mature media out of your main tank when you want to put fish in it.

Heh good point never though of that !

Silly me, thanks for the pointer hehe.
