Don't worry! It usually takes them 2 or 3 times to get it right. Once they start, they wont stop.

Also, how do you keep the fry from getting sucked into the filter?

I wouldn't worry about that too much. The fry are large and robust. But if you still worry, go to the petstore and buy a Aquaclear filter sponge. They are like 2 dollars for 3 of them, and you just put a hole in the middle and slide it over the intake tube.
