We have Big Bad Burt and Rosy (our Kribs) in a tank containing barbs (tiger and odessa) and loaches in a 50 USG planted tank (no CO2). They all rub along with Burt having a dislike of loaches and the loaches ignoring this fact. They routinely raise some fry which get eaten by the rest of the tank, mainly because half way through the parenting cycle either Burt or Rosy will fall out with the other (obviously thinking they can do better on their own) and chase the heck out of the other one. Obviously being a "single" parent isn't as easy so the fry get eaten. Last time they managed to hold their relationship together and operated as a team with the result that we now have three baby krib in the tank - they are at least an inch, maybe a little bit more in one case, and are happily fending for themselves.

Rosy has started to get territorial about the cave again and they have both started to defend the area around their patch more and the babies have been chased out on a couple of occasions. The babies are still basically black and white rather than having come into their colours.

Do we need to remove the babies now? Have they reached a saleable condition or do we need to grow them on in another tank (we have a 5 gallon tank which is usually used as the hospital tank)? If they don't need to come out yet when should we be planning to move them - when their colour come in?

Many thanks

Miles
PS I have read the "breading kribs" primer however that deals with a single species tank and in our tank Bert and Rosy are used to other fishes so the aggression is fairly spread out + there was some confusion between selling the babies at 1 month or 7 months :)

Yep, remove the young as the parents will turn on them once they have their new spawn. If you wanted to remove the fry earlier then you could do. That way you may be able to save a fair few more should you want to. :good:

The primer suggests that they should have the same size tank as they came from however we don't have space for another 50 USG tank (!) - will the 5 USG tank do?

Thanks

Miles
