Hey there!

I'm new to the forums, not new to fish keeping in general, but am quite new to the world of cichlids, both african and american.
So, I bought two new fish today, an Electric Yellow Cichlid, and a Kribensis. Now from what I understand, american and african cichlids aren't really supposed to be tanked together, but I thought, considering they are both supposed to be relatively placid fish, it would be okay  . However, my Kribensis is soooo aggressive to my Electric Yellow! He literally goes out of his way to hassle my other fish, nipping at him and chasing him for hours around the tank  . He's not doing to tell the other fish to stay away from his cave, so I don't know what is going on. Is this normal for the fish? Should I wait a few days to let him calm before I decide to remove my bully and take him back to the petstore? Will he calm down? I've not had this problem before with any other fish I've kept  , and I've been keeping fish for about 10 years now.
I only have a small tank, 30L, which you are going to tell me is too small for cichlids, I know this but I will upgrade when my fish grow, as they're currently about 3cms each, and are the only fish in the tank. There are three 'caves' for the Krib to hide in, and a fair amount of vegetation too, but yet still plenty of swimming area (basically, it's not crowded).
If I can just get some opinions on whether you think this behaviour is normal and will cease with time, or whether it's normal and it won't cease, or any suggestions as to how to fix it - maybe adding another tiny fish? Who knows. Any opinions are appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

Both fish are actually Old World (African) cichlids, and as peaceful cichlids go this is normal territorial behavior.

You really do need a bigger tank TBH min 30 ga. Also electric yellows prefer to be in larger groups 3 + and get to around 5"

I have only ever kept kribensis in the past and they were in a community tank with various sized fish and never experienced any bullying from them exept during spawning when they took over 1/2 the tank.

Kribs will adapt well to most water ph from 5 - 8 with neutral 7 being optimal. Yellow labs frefer it more alkaline 7.5

I believe your only way to resolve this is with a much bigger tank and proper reseach of the species and compatability.

Hope This helps.
