ive got a pair of kribs in my community tank
i was wondering how to tell the male from the female

Thanks
rewlyn

The male is blatantly more colourful than the female and sometimes has one or 2 "eyes" on the upper part of his tail....

^ Sorry LUdwig, but the female is more colorful. She has a deep red/purple , rounded stomach, with gold on her fins. The male is torpedo shaped, and has almost no color, except a red blotch on his stomach when breeding.

Males are larger with pointed anal, dorsal, and caudal fins. The female is brighter in color and during the spawning season, will develop a deep pink-red to purple belly coloration.

^ The fins arent that reliable. I've seen females with pointed fins. Uusllay if the female has a rounded stomach, color on it, gold fins, and rounded fins, then its a good indicator, but you don't want to base your sexing off fins. Once females are sexually mature, they have a colored belly, not just in spawning season.

Good luck with that one. I wouldnt suggest just walking into a store and sexing a krib by it's fins. Juvi Males don't have pointed fins.

well mine are just over a month old they have the markings and finnage as soon as i can catch them out of the plants i will post a pic of them up and show you

ok so 1 of my kribs has an "eye" on its tail, but both have pointy fins, so what does that mean

The eye in the tail is telling......

Now photobucket chooses this moment... (while I'm downloading) to do maintenance to their site.... anyhows, this is my male..... I'll place a phot of the femaly when they're back on line...... The pointed fins are evident in both male and female.

The eye is not a deciding factor. In the wild, it may have originally been a trait of males. But I have had several females with eye's on thier tails, sometimes even more than one! I discount the eye for sexing always. It means nothing to me.

You are right Krib.... So maybe the most reliable way to tell is the beautiful Rosy belly of the female when she displayes to impress the male....

In my oppinion , it is. But not just the red belly. The females have a deeper belly, even when not breeding. Like my Avatar, if you compared it with a male, the females stomach dips down and then back up. I just noticed, the female in my Avatar also has an eye spot on her dorsal fin!

Yes... the male is more "latterally" shaped, and the female more "Ovally"....
