(sorry if this should go in a tropical fish section... please move as needed)
So my "mother in law" has a pond (and a tank for winter months) with currently two koi fish. I think she originally had 5 but they died (to what I suspect was ammonia poisoning). She's another one of those ignorant fish keepers, but at least she is willing to get the correct information, which is why I'm here.
The 2 kois had babies this past summer so now she has about 50 1~2inch baby kois. She will be keeping some, but getting rid of most to lfs. Currently she has them separated. At this size, are they able to go with the parents?
Now she has what I suspect to be a 40gal tank for the winter months (which is very long here, summer is only 2~3 months). Needless to say they are very cramped in there.
What size tank does she need for say... 5 kois? I understand they really need to be in a giant pond but I don't think I can talk her into getting rid of them all together... and I know she won't be getting something like a 120gal tank. 
(I think in the end I'll talk to her about making her pond bigger so she can keep them in there all year round, as tanks really aren't suitable, especially since she won't be getting something over 100g)
And she has an aquatech 30-60 (I think). I know nothing about this filter so let me know if it's any good. The media doesn't look any good... just little slides of foam.
