Koi Fish For Angling...

Then go fishing different lake or river if you want different fish. Other anglers won't be happy if exotic fish eating their native fishes or ruining a lake, they will blame on you.

Krib, you were think only bluegills and redear sunfish but there's different species of sunfish that share waterway with the bluegills. Oscar is threatening to Florida Bass, Pygmy sunfish species, other threatened minnow species. So are other non native cichlids like convicts, jewels, tilipa, flowerhorns and midas which makes things more worse. Florida is little messed up with too many exotic species are loose in the state.

I don't like stocking non native fishes in the waterways for fishing reasons.

...... But it's so boring catching the same type of fish over and over... They all look alike, only size differs. and even if it's illegal,.... Who'll know that I'm the guilty party that stocked the exotics.... I'm sure all other anglers will be pleased.

If you think its boring to catch the same fish over and over then DON"T FISH!,
And if you think you can get away with it I'm afraid your wrong. I had a friend who thought it would be fine to do somthing similar to what your thinking of and they found out by the fish population and looked up liscenses and found him and he got in some deep s**t. Its not worth it, I'm sorry to say that you sound like a stubborn person still wanting to put other exotics in and its not right. I can recall the times I went to reservoirs expecting to catch some nice fish and all I caught were white fish or as I call them trash fish which are species of carp. Also with the oscars, they might not hurt one or three species of of sunfish but they can hurt a whole bunch of others species. I havn't been down to florida recently but I never heard people catching oscars. Its kinda a deal with the fish as it is with certain medicine for some people, It can help alot of people and it can make alot people sicker and even die. I understand it would be cool to have certain fish to catch but theres got to be a reason there not native in U.S. waters!

A very stupid Idea IMO too. Carp have caused tons of problems to waterways and native fish populations. If I ever caught a koi from a lake or river their is no way I would put it back. Bass, bluegills, and perch are much prettier than koi IMO. If you want to catch koi so badly make yourself a koi pond put some koi in it then fish from it.

Bloatedguppy, whitefish is good fish and not carp species but a fish that is closely related to the Rainbow trout and salmons. If the lake has some whitefish, its great as the whitefish are very sensitive to poor water quality which carp cause it and can cause whitefish population decline. And lots of species depends on the whitefish as their diet. No whitefish, no trophy gamefish.

I'm sorry I meant to say "White Carp". I know about the other white fish as it is a relative of the artic grayling althought they are not prefured by anglers to keep. I also have to go with the other post just start your own pond with koi or oscars as long as you have the weather requirements also do you live in Florida or in a Tornado zone just wondering cause there funny fish related stories about that.

Asian carp is taking over the Illinois River and Great Lakes: http://www.epa.gov/glnpo/invasive/asiancarp/index.html

quote from the link there:

"Asian Carp are a significant threat to the Great Lakes because they are large, extremely prolific, and consume vast amounts of food. They can weigh up to 100 pounds, and can grow to a length of more than four feet. They are well-suited to the climate of the Great Lakes region, which is similar to their native Asian habitats.

Researchers expect that Asian carp would disrupt the food chain that supports the native fish of the Great Lakes. Due to their large size, ravenous appetites, and rapid rate of reproduction, these fish could pose a significant risk to the Great Lakes Ecosystem. Eventually, they could become a dominant species in the Great Lakes."

I don't think that nearly as much is known about how Oscars would take to US waterways -- they are definitely more of a tropical fish than the carp -- but have non-native species in an environment is almost always a disaster. There are many, many more examples of the harm non-native species have done than the good. It really is quite a poor, poor idea.

If you want to go fishing for Oscars, go to their native waters and fish there.

OK guys.... Im sorry I got you P'..d off, but only playing devil's advocate..... I'm not serious, just wanted to test reactions. I'll never consider stocking Kois or any other non-indigenous fish in our balanced eco system.

I had something to this effect published in the forum page of the TFH magazine back in (I think) 1987.... They had a similar response highlighting the negative aspects and something interesting that they added in their reply, was that very few of these would survive due to the colouring making them more visible to predators (like some-one here mentioned) and also that those that did survive will revert back to their normal "wild" (uninteristing) colouration within a few generations, thus defeating the object...... But thanks for your heated response though.
